The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential.

The benefits of having a website that is compliant with W3C standards are many, but the one with the most impact on you and your visitors:

Web interoperability - Your website can be viewed in multiple browsers (Opera, Netscape, IE, Mozilla) without breaking or looking scrambled.

You will reduce the probability of loosing a customer because they could not access your website with the browser of their choice (or browser they use, based on their ISP configuration....for example: AOL). Each browser type has their own issues, but you can reduce those issues by remaining W3C compliant.
